Volunteer Spotlight: Karen Andresen

July 10, 2019 in inQueery

Volunteer Spotlight is a series that we do to highlight our spectacular volunteers that help keep Pacific Center running.  Today we’re speaking with Karen Andresen.

Hi Karen!  Can you introduce yourself for us?

My name is Karen, pronouns are she/her/hers. I was born in New York and raised in Walnut Creek. After grad school, I got married and raised three kids. I enjoyed volunteering in the schools, and now at the Pacific Center and Meals on Wheels. I’m a supporter of EQCA, GLAAD and Trevor.

How long have you been here at Pacific Center?

I have been volunteering at the Pacific Center since September 2017. I enjoy greeting clients and volunteering in an accepting place that helps so many.

What do you like to do in your spare time?  And what kinds of issues are important to you?

My favorite things to do are traveling, spending time with family, restaurants and movies, walking my dog and cycling classes.                                                   The issues that I care about are the rights of women, immigrants, LGBTQ+, and gun control. Race, gender, sexual orientation should not define us or our capabilities. We live in a country full of diversity with many talents and ideas that all contribute in a positive way.

Last question:  who inspires you?

My children inspire me. My youngest daughter was diagnosed with Pediatric MS as a teen. This has not stopped her from performing and pursuing a career in musical theatre. My other daughter just graduated from college with a double major in Law Society and Justice and Psychology and interns at Planned Parenthood. My son is a student at Cal. He continues to inspire me and others with his bravery after being kicked out of the Boy Scouts for being gay. He told his story on The Ellen Show and Anderson Cooper 360, and was instrumental in changing the discriminatory policy for the youth in the BSA.

Wow, those are impressive bios!  They must have been raised well 😉  Thank you for your time, and hope to see you soon at the front desk!
