Position Summary:

Interns and Trainees enrolled in Pacific Center’s Clinical Services Training Program receive valuable training while providing low-cost psychotherapy services to the diverse LGBTQ East Bay community. Through didactic trainings, supervision, and mentorship, provided by licensed clinicians who generously donate their time, our Interns and Trainees gain valuable skills while earning hours towards licensure. Our year long program provides LGBTQ-competent training for the next generation of mental health professionals.

Minimum Requirements:

Orientation and team building takes place in the first two weeks of the month and attendance is mandatory during this period. September Cohort applicants must be available Sept. 3 – Sept. 13, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am – 3:30 pm for orientation. Post-orientation, Interns/Trainees must be available for a total of 20 hours/week, including on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays, from 10am – noon for weekly Didactic Trainings, Group Supervision, Professional Development, and program meetings. All interns/trainees must be willing to complete client hours between Monday and Saturday each week. At least one evening is required but two are suggested.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate-level psychology or sociology program and must complete their first year of courses prior to internship start date.

Applicants must be proficient in Windows-based environment and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Access; basic knowledge of Google Apps for Domain, basic experience with Adobe Acrobat/Reader or similar PDF software; Previous experience with Practice Management software or other billing and payment software helpful but not required. Pacific Center uses Salesforce as a client and service tracking database. NOTE: Pacific Center does not utilize electronic records management software — all charting is manual. Applicants must be able to work in a physical charting environment with reasonable accommodations, when needed.

The intent of these application questions is to help the reviewers develop some sense of who you are as a person, as well as an understanding of who you are growing into as a clinician. We are interested in knowing why you are interested in working with the LGBTQ community, what experience you already have in dealing with any marginalized segment of the general population, and what you hope to gain as well as what you will bring to this experience.

Though most of our clientele come from the LGBTQ community, there is also diversity across many strata, including age, class, race, gender, sexual identity, and ethnicity. If selected to work here you should expect to work with clients who represent any number of combinations of these different demographic identifiers.

Application Questions:

Each applicant is expected to answer the six questions below and upload your responses into the online application form. With the exception of Question 1, please limit responses to no more than (1) one page (8 1/2″ x 11″) single-spaced for each question. We recommend you copy and paste these questions into a Microsoft Word document. Uploadable file formats: doc, docx, and pdf. Please use a legible default font in black, size 12pt font.

  • 1. Write an autobiographical statement addressing your interest in becoming a psychotherapist, as well as your current understanding of who you hope to become as a therapist. Include any aspects of your life or past experiences which seem relevant to you.
  • 2. The impact of culture and society on the development of the self is an important aspect of clinical thinking at the Pacific Center, where we primarily serve the mental health needs of the LGBTQ community in the Bay Area. Please reflect on your motivation to work with this community, as well as any personal or professional experience you may have with the LGBTQ community. Your answer should include some reflection on the impact of socio-cultural issues, focusing upon your own lived experiences of difference as it relates to your own development.
  • 3. Talk about your personal experience with psychotherapy including what was helpful, what was not, and your understanding of why. Please include specific descriptions of the length of time you worked with a therapist and whether it was individual, family, or group therapy.
  • 4. The clinical training program at the Pacific Center can be quite demanding on many levels—emotionally, intellectually, and personally, and requires a significant amount of time and energy (20 hours per week) without pay. How will you manage this and in what ways do you imagine its impact on your life?
  • 5. Is there any event on the horizon, including school requirements which may cause you to leave your placement early, without fulfilling your contract for the full 12 months? Please note that anyone unable to satisfy the terms of their contract, for any reason, will be asked to leave the training program. This is true even if the reason for non-compliance is a school change in class schedules.
